Tolerance, Hatred, Empathy

Posted in lagi-lagi ceramah on November 25, 2008 by miziwahid

Religious harmony, tolerance in diversity, inter-faith dialogues. It’s been 7 years since 9/11. How has that incident shaped the perception of non-Muslims towards Islam and its people till this very day? Below is an interesting video which I would recommend you to watch. An experiment by the ABC news team in the U.S. You’ll know of the outcome and percentage of those who are against Muslims compared to those who are in support of or have some form of empathy towards the Muslims. There are also those who do prefer not to express themselves openly.

Probably there’s a lesson to be learned for other Muslim minority communities around the world.

Citigroup, U.S.’s second largest bank announced yesterday that they will be retrenching 52000 employees worldwide. This is on top of the 23000 job cuts made earlier in the year. Now THAT’s scary…

The Secret to Riches?

Posted in lagi-lagi ceramah on November 15, 2008 by miziwahid

Many modern proponents say that the Law of Attraction has roots in Quantum Physics, though no reputable scientist or publication ever supported the alleged scientific credentials of this theory. According to proponents of this law, thoughts have an energy that attracts like energy. In order to control this energy, proponents state that people must practice four things:

  1. Know what you want.
  2. Ask the universe for it.
  3. Feel and behave as if the object of your desire is on its way.
  4. Be open to receiving it.

Thinking of what one does not have, they say, manifests itself in not having, while if one abides by these principles, and avoids “negative” thoughts, the Universe will manifest a person’s desires. – (Wikipedia)

Is it similar to a prayer (du’a)? We know what we want. We always pray for the good things. And in those prayers we will only use and mention positive words. And in awaiting for our prayers to be answered, we’re optimistic and constantly hoping for the best outcome. Hmmm…

Courage

Posted in lagi-lagi ceramah on November 15, 2008 by miziwahid

What stops us? Keeps us from doing what we need to do? Prevents us from experiencing the depth of relationships, love and meaning in our lives?

Fear is something we all experience—it’s part of the human condition. The only way to dispel fear is to look it in the face and utilize courage. Courage is not the absence of fear, it’s the triumph over it, revealing to you what you’re truly capable of. Have courage my friends, and let’s give to our loved ones, friends and colleagues with courageous acts of generosity and kindness.

“Without courage, wisdom bears no fruit.” — Baltasar Gracián

Ust Oh Ust… #2

Posted in lagi-lagi ceramah on November 3, 2008 by miziwahid

Caller: Assalamualaikum Ust

Ust: Wa’alaikumussalam wr wb, how can I help you brother?

Caller: I have a question about something that I’m not too sure of…do you mind clarifying?

Ust: Sure, no problem. What is it?

Caller: You see, I just bought a new handphone and I’m not too sure if I can use it..

Ust: Why? Is it not good enough? Too complicated?

Caller: No no no…that’s not it Ust. Actually… I was wondering about something else.. Hmmm.. Would I need to perform the cleansing (sertu) on the handphone..?

Ust: Sertu the handphone?? What?! Why would you wanna do that??

Caller: Well it’s because I bought it from a non-Muslim.

Ust: Huh? and what made you think you would need to sertu everything a non-Muslim had touched or came into contact with?

Caller: Well…

Ust: If that were so, then we would need to sertu the door knobs at our schools and offices, the handle-bars in buses and trains, and the blah bla blah bla blah..and the blah bla blah bla blah…

Caller: Ust? Erm…I think I get your point…

Ust: No wait..! I’m not done yet brother… have you even thought about what your brand-new handphone’s condition would be after you sertu it….???

Caller: ……….*thinking*..*imagining*….

Sertu: The art of cleansing an area which has come into physical contact with a dog’s saliva, its wet body, or a pig (according to Imam Shafi’ie). This requires cleansing for a number of 7 times, one of which needs to be mixed with pure soil (until it becomes muddy).

Warmest regards,

Mizi
